Welcome Message

Assembly Chair
Matthew Drake, MD

Welcome to the Respiratory Structure and Function (RSF) Assembly, where respiratory science finds its home within ATS. The Assembly’s scientific scope is one of ATS’s broadest, from molecular mechanisms and whole-lung physiology to clinical applications in health and disease. Our members’ interests encompass respiratory physiology, cellular mechanics and extracellular matrix interactions, control of ventilation, respiratory neurobiology, lung-heart interactions, bronchial circulation, acute lung injury, imaging, respiratory modeling, gas exchange, lung function testing, aerosol drug delivery, and beyond. Our assembly’s 2,500+ members reflect our scientific diversity, with a third based internationally, a third are women, and a third are younger than 40. Our Early Career Professional Working Group is a particular source of energy, connecting graduate students, clinical fellows, and junior faculty with mentorship, conference submission guidance, and leadership opportunities through the ATS apprenticeship program.

The RSF Assembly is active year-round, not only at the annual conference. Our Executive Committee meets monthly to advance committee work related to program development, nominations, web content, science strategy, and international partnerships. As Assembly Chair, my priorities include increasing the visibility of RSF science within ATS, strengthening ties with our PhD scientists, early career members, and international colleagues, and supporting the career growth of our members at every stage. RSF exists to serve you by providing a platform to present your work, network and exchange ideas, and build your career across the full bench-to-bedside continuum. I encourage all members to engage with our webinars throughout the year and to submit proposals and abstracts for International Conference programming. Mentorship and apprenticeship programs also offer valuable opportunities to deepen your involvement and build lasting connections within ATS. Your innovation and energy drive the field of respiratory medicine forward, and together we can help to advance and promote lung health.

We welcome your questions and input at rsf@thoracic.org.
