ATS Aging Interest Group

Lauren E Ferrante, MD, MHS, ATSF & Nathan E Brummel, MD, MSCI, ATSF (Co-Chairs)

The Aging Interest Group is an interprofessional group with a multipronged focus on improving the health of older adults. Our membership includes aging-focused groups across pulmonary & critical care medicine, with subgroups in Critical Care, Lung Aging Research, Clinical Pulmonary Medicine, and Palliative Care. Together these aging-focused groups represent many of the wide-ranging interests of the ATS membership.

When reading ATS program materials or the ATS website, please note that this group is referred to as the “Aging in Critical Care Interest Group” due to its origins and appointment under the Critical Care Assembly. However, it encompasses all aging-focused activities at the ATS as noted below.

Aging in Critical Care Interest Group

Co-Chairs:
Nathan Brummel, MD, MSCI (The Ohio State University)
Lauren Ferrante, MD, MHS (Yale School of Medicine)

The Aging in Critical Care Interest Group is a collaborative, interdisciplinary group of critical care experts with a multipronged focus on improving the health of older adults across the spectrum of critical illness and recovery. We work to (1) identify and develop patient-centered, aging-focused research priorities across the spectrum of critical illness and recovery, (2) enhance the integration of geriatrics principles and models of geriatric care into critical care medicine training and professional development, and (3) increase awareness of important clinical care issues faced by older adults with a critical illness.

Lung Aging Research Working Group

Co-Chairs:
Irfan Rahman, PhD, ATSF (University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, NY)
Beata Kosmider, PhD (Temple University, Philadelphia, PA)
Mareike Lehmann, PhD (University of Marburg, Germany)

The Lung Aging Research Working Group aims to increase awareness and disseminate knowledge of the basic biology of lung aging. We strive to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging and age-related lung diseases and use emerging technologies for cellular mapping of lung aging. Ultimately, we want to exploit this knowledge to develop therapeutics targeting age-related dysfunction spanning development to late-life.

Geriatrics in Pulmonary ("GeriPulm") Subgroup

Co-chairs:

Lauren Pollack, MD, MS (University of Washington)
Angela Suen, MD (UCSF)
Anand Iyer, MD, MSPH (University of Alabama at Birmingham)

The overarching goal of this sub-group is to promote integration of geriatrics principles into routine pulmonary practice. We are a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and interprofessional community of clinicians, educators, and researchers focused on providing age-friendly care for people with respiratory disease. Priorities include supporting older adults in maintaining functional ability and independence, minimizing harm from polypharmacy, promoting goal-concordant care across the continuum, and maximizing quality of life.

Palliative Care Subgroup

Co-chairs:
Don Sullivan, MD, MA, MCR (Oregon Health & Science University)
Anand Iyer, MD, MSPH (University of Alabama at Birmingham)

Our interest group is an interprofessional, international group of clinicians and researchers focused on approaches that improve the quality of life of those with serious respiratory illness across the lifespan. Our group is home to members engaged in research, clinical care, training and education, and health policy scholarly pursuits in all three pillars of the ATS: pulmonary, critical care, and sleep.
