William C. Bailey, MD
Dr. Bailey was a pioneering clinician-scientist, mentor, and lifelong champion of lung health. For 42 years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he advanced care and research in asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, and smoking cessation, and founded the UAB Lung Health Center. A dedicated ATS member, Dr. Bailey served on the ATS Foundation Board of Trustees, as well as the Society's Tobacco Action Committee. His longstanding philanthropy included early and generous support for the Clinical Training Fund and the Ziskind Clinical Research Scholar Award — a recognition that celebrates pulmonary and critical care fellows who exemplify excellence in clinical research.
To honor his legacy, donations may be made to the Ziskind Clinical Training Fund.

Mr. Mike Breslin
Mary transitioned from ICU nurse to establish one of the first Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs in California. Mary established the Pulmonary Education and Research Foundation of the California Society for Pulmonary Rehabilitation which for almost 40 years promoted Pulmonary Rehabilitation in alignment with ATS Pulmonary Rehabilitation Assembly activities.

Mr. Hennings was a member of the Respiratory Innovation Summit community for many years, serving on both the Planning and Advisory Committees.
Mr. Jack Kelly
Jack Kelly served as president and CEO of the Lymphangiomatosis and Gorham's Disease Alliance (LGDA) and a member of the ATS Public Advisory Roundtable from 2011-2018. During that time, he also served on the ATS Education and International Health Committees. At a time when few resources, networks, or research efforts existed for Complex Lymphatic Anomalies (CLAs), Jack provided steady leadership grounded in compassion, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of community.
Franco Laghi, MD
Dr. Laghi dedicated his career spanning over 30 years to caring for patients who were critically ill at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center. He was a physician-scientist and a leading expert in the field of respiratory muscle physiology. Dr. Laghi served as a member of the ATS Clinicians Advisory Committee from 2010-2011 as well as a member of the RSF Assembly Program Committee.
Thomas R. Martin, MD
Dr. Martin served as president of the American Thoracic Society from 2002-2003; chair of the Assembly on Allergy, Immunology and Inflammation, associate editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and a member of the ATS Executive Committee (1999-2004). He established the ATS Research Program during his term as ATS president, one of many important legacies. He asked that contributions in his memory go to the ATS Research Program. In 2007, he received the William J. Martin, II PAR Distinguished Achievement Award from the ATS Public Advisory Roundtable.
Michael D. L. Morgan, MD
Professor Morgan served on the ATS International Conference from 2011 – 2013 and served the Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) Assembly many times on the Program and Planning Committees from 2008 – 2017. Professor Morgan received an ATS Recognition Award in 2018 and a Lifetime achievement award in 2022 from the ATS PR Assembly in recognition of his work and dedication to the assembly. He also co-authored the ATS/ ERS Statement on Pulmonary Rehabilitation (2013).

Dr. Bates served as president of the American Thoracic Society from 1988-1989, and received the Edward Livingston Trudeau Medal, the society’s highest honor, in 2000.
Jerome S. Brody, MD
Dr. Brody received a Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments from the Assembly on Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology in 1997.
Mark J. Cowan, MD
Dr. Cowan served as a member of the ATS Council of Chapter Representatives from 2009-2010.
J. Randall Curtis, MD, MPH
Randy Curtis served as president of the American Thoracic Society from 2009-2010. He was the recipient of the 2022 Outstanding Clinician Award and was awarded the Edward Livingston Trudeau Award, our society’s highest honor, which was awarded posthumously at ATS 2023. Dr. Curtis was also a member of the 1905 Circle, an elite group of ATS donors. The ATS has a named Respiratory Health Award in compassion and humanism in his memory.
Mary Gawlicki
Mary and Ted Gawlicki founded the Gawlicki Family Foundation in 2012 and provided grant support for many ATS programs associated with pulmonary rehabilitation. Mary served as a member of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Reimbursement Work Group from 2020-2023.
Bettina C. Hilman, MD
Dr. Hilman was a pioneer in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, asthma and immunodeficiencies.
Leszek K. Kubin, PhD
Dr. Kubin served on the program committee for the Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology Assembly from 2005-2008.
Claude Lenfant, MD
Dr. Lenfant was the longest-serving director of the National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, with a tenure from 1982 to 2003. Upon leaving NIH, he continued his dedication to chronic disease control by serving as executive director of the Global Initiatives for Asthma (GINA) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) and the planning committee of the World Health Organization’s Global Alliance Against Chronic Respiratory Diseases. He was recognized with the J. Burns Amberson Lecture Award in 1982, the John W. Walsh Award for Excellence in 2003, and the ATS Public Service Award in 2004.

Dr. Newhouse founded the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, where he invented the Aerochamber ™, which is sold worldwide.

Kenneth L. Brigham, MD
Dr. Brigham served as president of the American Thoracic Society from 1989-1990 and received the Distinguished Achievement Award in 2003.
Ms. Francine Comi
Fran Comi staffed the ATS International Conference Committee for more than 40 years. She is the first staff recipient of the ATS Distinguished Achievement Award. Her insightful and encyclopedic knowledge about the ATS International Conference, the leading respiratory conference in the world, has shaped the careers of a generation of members and staff alike. Fran was also a member of the 1905 Circle, an elite group of ATS donors. Donations in her memory will support an annual keynote symposium in her memory, as well as honoring her wish that an award for exemplary mid-career staff be created in her name.

Mr. Jeffrey R. Goldstein
Mr. Goldstein was the president and founder of the Lung Transplant Foundation. For more than 18 years after his double lung transplant, Jeff dedicated himself to improving the lives of other lung transplant patients and their families. He served a member of the ATS Public Advisory Roundtable from 2013-2021. Through PAR he served on the Awards Committee, the Environmental Health Policy Committee and the Education Committee, as well as the ATS Foundation Board of Trustees.
Robert F. Grover, MD, PhD
Dr. Grover received the Edward Livingston Trudeau Medal, the society’s highest honor, in 1995. The ATS Grover Conference, endowed by Dr. Grover’s estate, is held on a biennial basis and is the only international meeting in North America that repeatedly focuses on subjects relevant to lung vascular biology and medicine. The Robert F. Grover Award is named in his honor. He is also a member of the 1905 Circle, an elite group of ATS donors.

Pierre P. Massion, MD
Dr. Massion served the Thoracic Oncology Assembly as Nominating Committee Chair 2015-2016, the Planning Committee and its chair 2017-2019 and 2019-2021 respectively. Dr. Massion was awarded one of the two first grants from the ATS Research Program – the ATS/Veterans Administration Research Career Development Grant in 2004. A designated fund supports an award in the Thoracic Oncology Assembly in his memory.
