Public Advisory Roundtable (PAR)

The ATS PAR is dedicated to amplifying the voices of patients and caregivers within the American Thoracic Society and the respiratory health community. As a member of PAR, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with medical professionals, advocate for policy changes, and contribute to research and education efforts. Members will be appointed, and decision will be sent by mid-April 2025. Apply Now. 

Membership Information

1. Membership Criteria

Individuals who serve in leadership/decision-making roles within not-for-profit health-related organizations representing individuals with respiratory diseases, sleep-related conditions, or critical illnesses are encouraged to apply. Additional criteria include:

  • Minimum of one year membership with the community of Respiratory Public Representatives (this requirement may be waived under special circumstances by the PAR Executive Committee).
  • Leadership of organization that is national in scope and mission and direct connection with patients impacted by respiratory diseases, sleep-related conditions, or critical illnesses.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to represent all PAR organizations, not solely one’s own organization/disease state.
  • Demonstrated record of successful implementation of programs and services.
  • Advocacy for the improvement of the quality of life of people affected.
  • Appointment by the ATS President under special circumstances.

2. ATS PAR Member’ Responsibilities

ATS PAR Members are expected to:

  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in monthly PAR membership meetings (fourth Tuesday of each month at 12:00 pm ET) via Zoom.
  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in other meetings and conference calls.
  • Serve on ATS standing committees, ad-hoc committees, or task forces as appointed by the ATS President.
  • Stay informed about ATS PAR activities and initiatives.
  • Participate in the development and execution of the ATS PAR strategic plan.
  • Adhere to the ATS PAR Code of Ethics.
  • Act in the best interest of the ATS PAR, setting aside personal or organizational agendas.
  • Engage their constituency in ATS PAR activities that benefit individuals affected by respiratory diseases, sleep-related conditions, or critical illnesses.
  • Represent the ATS PAR in a positive manner and address grievances through the PAR Executive Committee.
  • Evaluate the performance of the ATS PAR and suggest improvements.
  • Recruit and mentor members of the Community of Respiratory Public Representatives.

3. Annual Membership Review

Membership will be reviewed annually by the PAR Executive Committee to ensure that basic membership criteria and responsibilities are met and/or maintained. The process includes:

  • Review of each member’s participation and contributions related to the responsibilities listed above.
  • Recommendations for membership renewal forwarded to the ATS President for final approval.
  • Notification of the review decision sent by the PAR Chair to each PAR member.

4. Membership Term Period

The ATS PAR membership year begins at the start of the ATS International Conference, in May of each year. If a member must leave before the International Conference, the PAR position will remain vacant until the next committee year, following established PAR policies.

Meetings

  • ATS PAR meets monthly via Zoom end of month every Tuesday 12 p.m. ET.
  • In-person annual PAR Planning meeting (October/November).
  • ATS International Conference Meeting (third week of May).
