Assembly on Pulmonary Infections & Tuberculosis Early Career Recognition Award

Meet the 2025 Winner: Katrina Traber, MD, PhD, ATSF

The long-term goal of her research program is to identify and develop new strategies to treat severe neutrophil-based sequelae of pneumonia such as ARDS and sepsis. Currently, they are investigating neutrophil biology in pneumonia through two lenses. First, they are investigating phenotypic changes that occur in neutrophils as they migrate from the circulation to the alveolar space during acute infection. Secondly, they are examining cytokine signaling pathways that support neutrophil migration to the lung during pneumonia, with a specific focus on Oncostatin M, a cytokine produced at high levels in many acute and chronic inflammatory settings, including pneumonia, ARDS and sepsis. Her research team uses mouse models of pneumonia as well as complex ex vivo and in vitro model systems of pulmonary cells. They have extensive experience in modeling several forms of pneumonia, advanced analytical techniques, and in vitro model systems relevant to pneumonia and lung injury.

In addition to research, Dr. Traber is a clinician in the Allergy, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep section of the Department of Medicine. Her clinical duties include attending in the Medical ICU, the pulmonary inpatient consult service, and outpatient tuberculosis and general pulmonary clinics.
