This session aims to address challenges and opportunities in tackling the global burden of pediatric pneumonia. Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children under five, outside of the neonatal period, with several well-recognized risk factors. Improvements in socioeconomic status, child nutrition, HIV control, and the availability of conjugate vaccines for Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae have reduced pneumonia incidence; however, a substantial disease burden remains due to other common and preventable risk factors. Additionally, there is a significant disparity in outcomes, with approximately 99% of pediatric deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
