In related news, EPA is also proposing new rules to reduce mercury and other air toxic emissions from coal and oil-fired power plants. The ATS submitted comments at an EPA public hearing in support of more protective mercury and air toxin standards. The ATS specifically expressed support for a more protective standard for lignite or brown coal – compressed peat with a high level of mercury that is used at some U.S. power plants. The ATS also spoke in support of continuous fence-line monitoring of emissions to ensure compliance with standards and to provide local communities more accurate information on local pollution exposure levels.
