Michael Oscar Harhay PhD, MPH, to Receive a 2025 American Thoracic Society Respiratory Health Award

Dr. Harhay will be formally recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field at the ATS 2025 International Conference in San Francisco.

NEW YORK, NY (May 9, 2025) -- The American Thoracic Society is proud to announce that Michael Oscar Harhay, PhD, MPH, will receive a 2025 ATS Respiratory Health Award. Dr. Harhay will be presented with ATS’s Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science for his exemplary achievements in respiratory health based on his work at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

All award recipients will be recognized for their contributions and achievements in pulmonary disease, critical care, and sleep health at the upcoming ATS 2025 International Conference to be held May 16-21 in San Francisco. The awards represent outstanding respiratory health contributions through various means, from research and diagnosis to education and advocacy.

The Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science recognizes and celebrates an individual who has demonstrated potential for significant achievement and contributions. This award is aimed at the rising generation of individuals who will be tomorrow’s leaders in science.

“I am deeply honored to receive the Jo Rae Wright Award from the American Thoracic Society, which has been my scientific home since I was a PhD student,” Dr. Harhay said. “As both the deputy statistical editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, the ATS's flagship journal, and a methodologist nominated by the ATS PhD and Basic and Translational Scientist Working Group, I believe this recognition highlights the vital role of methodological innovation in advancing respiratory science. This honor inspires our team to continue advancing patient-centered research to improve outcomes for critically and seriously ill patients.”
