Marc Peters-Golden, MD, to be Awarded the 

American Thoracic Society’s 2026 J. Burns Amberson Lecture

for Promoting Respiratory Health

ATS 2026, Orlando, Fla. (May 16, 2026) – The American Thoracic Society is proud to announce that Marc Peters-Golden, MD, has been nominated and will receive the 2026 J. Burns Amberson Lecture. This honor celebrates his outstanding work at the University of Michigan.


Dr. Peters-Golden and other award recipients will be recognized for their achievements at the ATS 2026 International Conference taking place on Orlando, Fla., Friday through Wednesday. The awards recognize outstanding respiratory health contributions, from research and diagnosis to education and advocacy.

Dr. Peters-Goden is a long-time medical educator at the University of Michigan Medical School who has published more than 300 articles and chapters. His research focuses on lung inflammation, immunity and tissue remodeling.

The J. Burns Amberson Lecture recognizes major contributions to research that have advanced the understanding of respiratory disease, critical illness or sleep disorders. This award also recognizes exemplary professionalism, collegiality and citizenship through leadership in the ATS community. The lecture is given in honor of James Burns Amberson, an international authority on chest disease and tuberculosis.

This year’s ATS awards have placed a special emphasis on efforts designed to eliminate health disparities, and award winners are a diverse group inclusive of all genders, ethnicities and disciplines.
