James Kiley, MS, PhD, to Receive a 2025 American Thoracic Society Respiratory Health Award

Dr. Kiley will be formally recognized with ATS’s Respiratory Health Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the field at the ATS 2025 International Conference in San Francisco.

NEW YORK, NY (May 15, 2025) -- The American Thoracic Society is proud to announce that James Kiley, MS, PhD, will receive a 2025 ATS Respiratory Health Award. Dr. Kiley will be presented with ATS’s Respiratory Health Lifetime Achievement Award for his exemplary achievements in respiratory health based on his work from 1999 to 2024 at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Kiley will also receive a Presidential Commendation from ATS President Irina Petrache, MD, ATSF, May 17 during the opening ceremony of the ATS 2025 International Conference in San Francisco. The commendation is presented at the discretion of the ATS president to members for their great service to the society.

All award recipients will be recognized for their contributions and achievements in pulmonary disease, critical care, and sleep health at the upcoming ATS 2025 International Conference to be held May 16-21 in San Francisco. The Respiratory Health awards represent outstanding respiratory health contributions through various means, from research and diagnosis to education and advocacy.

The Respiratory Health Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed by the American Thoracic Society for career-long excellence in pulmonary medicine. This prestigious award recognizes individuals whose groundbreaking contributions, leadership, and unwavering commitment have profoundly advanced the field, shaped scientific understanding, and strengthened the pulmonary community. Their work has played a pivotal role in driving innovation, improving patient care, and furthering the mission of the ATS to advance respiratory health worldwide.

“I am honored to receive this Lifetime Achievement Award from ATS,” said Dr. Kiley. “This recognition reflects not only my personal journey, but also the invaluable support and collaborations I’ve received from so many throughout my career at the NIH.
