Elizabeth M. Viglianti, MD, MPH, MSc, to be Awarded the American Thoracic Society’s 2026 Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science for Promoting Respiratory Health

ATS 2026, Orlando, Fla. (May 18, 2026) – The American Thoracic Society is proud to announce that Elizabeth M. Viglianti, MD, MPH, MSc, has been nominated and will receive the 2026 Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science. This award celebrates her outstanding work at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Viglianti and other award recipients will be recognized for their achievements at the ATS 2026 International Conference taking place in Orlando, Fla., Friday through Wednesday. The awards recognize outstanding respiratory health contributions, from research and diagnosis to education and advocacy.

Dr. Viglianti – who is certified in internal medicine, pulmonology, and critical care – is a physician–scientist whose work focuses on understanding the development, trajectories, and outcomes of persistent critical illness, with the goal of improving prognostication, decision-making, and long-term outcomes for critically ill patients and their families.

The Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science recognizes demonstrated potential for significant achievement and contributions. This award is aimed at the rising generation of individuals who will be tomorrow’s leaders in science.

This year’s ATS awards have placed a special emphasis on efforts designed to eliminate health disparities, and award winners are a diverse group inclusive of all genders, ethnicities and disciplines.
