Meet the 2025 Winner: Iris A. Perez, MD, ATSF

Iris A. Perez, MD is a pediatric pulmonologist and sleep medicine specialist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). She was recently promoted to the rank of Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC). She is the Program Director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at USC+LA General Medical Center. Dr. Perez is the Director of the Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome and Diaphragm Pacing Program at CHLA. She is active in the Pediatric and Sleep Respiratory Neurobiology (SRN) assemblies. She currently serves on the ATS SCALe Core Curriculum and the Pediatric Assembly Program Committee. For several years, she co-chaired the SRN Website Education Subcommittee tasked with producing patient education materials. She is the incoming co-director of the SRN Web Committee.
Dr. Perez is devoted to mentoring undergraduates, medical students, trainees, and early career faculty. She is a research mentor for several undergraduate and medical students, introducing them to pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine. She finds joy in seeing her mentees reach their career goals. Dr. Perez attributes her love of teaching and teaching style to her mentors, mentees, and her parents who were themselves educators.
Description
The Pediatric Clinician Educator Award recognizes a candidate at the late Assistant or Associate Professor level for their outstanding and innovative clinical and teaching abilities.
Criteria
- A letter from the person submitting the nomination describing the candidate’s skills.
- The candidate to be a member of the ATS.
- The nominee’s curriculum vitae.
- Up to three letters of support from current or past trainees. There may be co-signatories, but no more than three letters will be accepted.
