COPD is a complex disorder for which the therapeutic armamentarium has historically been limited but a rational posture to cure is now a viable goal. The founders of COPD-iNet identified an upstream impediment to this posture: The absence of a structured international community of basic and clinical COPD researchers with intent on identifying targets and moving expeditiously to clinical validation. COPD-iNet serves this need. The annual symposia will present the “state of the art” in COPD research and define clear, achievable and measurable goals for the research community. The leadership of COPD-iNet includes several active ATS members with a strong representation of the Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology Assembly. This relationship has been critical to the success of COPD-iNet and is highly prioritized. The fuel of COPD research in 2024 is the trifecta of team science, aligned interests and aspiration. The second annual COPD-iNet symposium will reinforce these themes to move the field along its path to a cure for this highly burdensome condition.
