
Jakob McSparron, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and the Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is a clinician educator and intensivist recognized nationally for his contributions to medical education, leadership, and curriculum innovation. Dr. McSparron attended medical school at Weill Cornell Medical College and completed residency in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital Cornell. He went on to complete fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Harvard Combined Training Program. He received formal training in education as a Rabkin Fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and completed the Harvard Medical School Fellowship in Medical Education Research.
Dr. McSparron previously served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where he served as Associate Program Director for both the Internal Medicine Residency Program and the Harvard Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship. He was recognized for excellence in teaching with awards such as the Soma Weiss Award for Clinical Teaching and the Hermann Blumgart Faculty Award.
Since transitioning to the University of Michigan, Dr. McSparron has continued in leadership roles, serving as Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship since 2020 as well as Associate Director of the Critical Care Medicine Unit. His leadership extends across the continuum of medical education, including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education. He has received the H. Marvin Pollard Award for Outstanding Teaching of Residents and the institutional Program Director Excellence Award.
Dr. McSparron has served as course director for several regional and national continuing medical education programs. He has been involved in educational programs within the American Thoracic Society for over a decade. He previously served as Vice-Chair of the Education Committee and Co-Chair for the Critical Care Core Curriculum. He is currently Course Director for the Fellows Track Symposium and has been recognized with the Mid-Career Educator Award from the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Program Directors.
Dr. McSparron’s educational academic interests focus on procedural education, educational theory, and interdisciplinary teamwork in the ICU. He is committed to advancing medical education and fostering excellence among learners across all levels.
