Joshua Benditt, MD has had the great privilege during his career to participate in teaching at many levels, research in large and small studies and direct clinical care in the hospital and outpatient clinic. All of those activities have been very rewarding, but it has been working directly with patients that has been the bedrock. Much of his outpatient care has been focused on neuromuscular respiratory failure in individuals with muscular dystrophies, spinal cord injury, ALS, etc. With the advent of noninvasive ventilation there has been a revolution in survival for some patients with these disorders. For example, he now cares for a number of patients in their mid to late 40’s who have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. As recently as the 1990’s, the average life expectancy was 24-25 years. He has been fortunate to be able to participate in this revolution in care. It has been a blessing to him.
